Ski Pylon

Recommended Posts

The Pylon on my '02 Sunsetter LXI has a bit of movement to it. Not much, difficult to measure, but I'd say maybe 1/16th inch play when I try to wiggle it side to side, maybe less, but it does move.

I have heard that they are fiberglassed in, and ANY movement is unacceptable. I have also heard they are attached with a bolt, and therefore you may be able to tighten it up.

I don't intend to pull a parasail or anything, and I'm not a world class skier, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can get in there and tighten anything up, or is it a more involved job, maybe one for the dealer.

In deference to Tracie's post about getting some content on the site, please spare me the comments about how my pylon should be rock solid when I'm wiggling on it.

Not sure on the newer models but on my 96 Sunsetter it is bolted in. You can check this out by opening the engine cover. As you forward towards the pylon there is a black panel just below the floor that is held on by four screws you remove the panel and it will expose the bottom half of the pylon where if it is bolted the bolt will be located here. Also this is typically where the bilge pump is. Now as for play if the bolt is loose you can tighten hopefully it’s that simple. If not, I would remove the pylon and check out the fiberglass around the opening just to see if you have any issues that might be going on. If nothing looks bad you could simply get some shim material and wrap it around the pylon to take up for any space in there. You get it in all sizes starting as small as .001” and different widths. If you don't feel comfortable with it take it to the dealer. Hope this helps
