Steering Cable Help - cable bound in stern pivot fitting

Recommended Posts

I've read most of the steering cable topics and D-Goose provides a great step by step (D-GOOSE Steering Cable DIY) DIY. However, what I haven't seen covered is what to do if the cable is bound up in the black threaded sleeve that goes thru the pivot fitting. I had this problem a year ago and finally was able to free the cable from the threaded sleeve by placing a screwdriver in the cable hole for the rudder attachment and working it back and forth. Once free I lubed the end of the cable with marine grease and was good to go. Steering was a breeze so I didn't think it was the cable itself. Now I have the problem again and am not having as much success breaking the binding between the cable and sleeve. I probably should have replaced the cable the last time and once I get it free will do so.

Any recommendation on how to get the cable unstuck from the pivot sleeve? Do I need to post a pic?

Got it. Placed a screwdriver in cable end hole for rudder attachment and twisted cable nut with channel locks until screwdriver came into contact with hull. Kept twisting cable nut until "sticktion" broke free. Now able to steer with some effort. Now able to replace cable based on earlier posts.
