Fuel blowing out the breather

Hi Guys,

I know that the manual for the Response LXi says that not to overfill with fuel to allow the fuel room to expand with heat and not overflow out through the breather. My question is, how do you overfill? I filled my '08 Response LXi last weekend and when the hose clicked off I stopped, which I would assume is not overfilling. Yesterday I had fuel blowing out the breather... Does anyone know of a way to prevent this happening, apart from not filling the boat? If not I'll just keep refilling the boat before it goes in the water rather than after each day, I was just trying to save time getting to the water the next time.

Cheers!

Adding a fuel air separator will easily take care of that problem, on the LXI the vent doesn't have a whole lot of dead rise above the fuel tank so it doesn't take much to push fuel out the vent. The vent is a open 3/8 hose with no restriction so if the tank is topped off it will push fuel out the vent during expansion or in transport.

Other than not topping your gas tank all the way full (watch your gauge when filling) you can install a fuel air separator.

Here is some more info on the racor LG50 on our parts site. http://www.bakesonline.com/detail.aspx?ID=1314

Hope this helps.

Why doesn't Malibu install these stock? I put one on my boat in 06 and have no doubt saved several gallons of spilled fuel.

If Malibu installed them as stock it would be a $50 item that you can't see that most people would not want to pay for.

It seems to me that raw gas (easily) coming out of the vent during different scenarios should be a USCG required fix. The same with any (below water line) thru-hull fitting now requiring a shut-off valve. All those shut off valves must add up to about $50 and you don't really see them. I bet a lot of people don't even know where they are or what they do/are for.

To be honest i don't know why the factory has not installed or offered the Racor LG50. Every boat manufacture has the similar fuel storage system with a open vent to the tank so I'm sure all boaters have fought fuel coming out the vent at some point.

We've always done the LG50 as a "dealer option" for customers that really like to top off their fuel tank.

Malibu could, at the VERY LEAST, put a loop in the vent hose.

My Response came with a loop in the vent hose. It has never spit fuel out the vent unless it was parked on a slope with the vent on the down hill side. I would have assumed that all Malibu boats would have a loop in the vent hose.
