Engine will start, but won’t run

Recommended Posts

We have a 2004 Response with a 310 engine, the engine will start, but won’t run when the ignition key returns back to its normal position. We have changed the ignition switch and still have the same fault, we think it could be the coil’s ballast resister if one is fitted. Could someone tell me where the ballast resister is? Or another reason for the problem.

The schematic does not show a resistor to the coil. It should have keyed 12v. A purple wire from the key switch through the black plug at the rear of the engine to the coil. The coil gets 12v from the starter during cranking.

I seem to remember somebody, somewhere saying that since the back of the lanyard switch has 4 connectors on it...If you swap the two wires that are connected now to the two connectors that are not currently being used, the switch will work in reverse. Meaning, with the lanyard out, the boat will start. Lanyard in place, boat will not start. Thus, you don't need to do any permanent type of mod. and you can kill the ignition system easily by just pressing the button in. Comes in handy when you're working on the motor.

Thanks for your reply, knowing that there is no resister, we were able to then look and find that the lanyard switch was faulty. We have never used it! It is suprising that the lanyard does not kill both circuits, but then if you have fallen out of the boat it’s not as you are in a position to try and start it. Dudley Water Ski Club members can now go skiing tomorrow, thank you for your help.
