Fuel Filter on top of tank

Recommended Posts

I am trying to settle an argument. on a 1998 Sunsetter there is an in line fuel filter indented on top of the gas tank.

Which way should the arrow be pointing on the filter when installed??

Fuel goes into the tank in the large hose and out through the small (filtered hose). The filter will not fit on the fill hose. There is also a vent hose that is small going to the vent on the outside of the hull.

I guessI need to clarify my question.

Which way does the fuel flow through this filter? To the tank or away from the tank?

So if you haven't had your question answered the arrow will be facing the direction to the engine (away from the tank)

The small hose should be ID of 3/8", or maybe even 1/4" on that boat. It will look very small when compared with the filler hose going to the tank.

Still confusing.

There is more than one fuel hose on the tank plus the hose used to put gas into the tank. By the gas gage sender there is a fuel hose that goes to the fuel pump on the engine. Laying on top of the tank there is another hose with an inline fuel filter that goes to the tank.

The hose with the filter laying on top of the tank is the one in question.

Which way does the fuel flow through this hose? Please remember I am talking about the one that lays directly on top in the middle of the tank. You have to remove the ski storeage carpet liner to get at it. There is also a fuel shut off on this hose.

In different terms. Is this hose a suction hose or a return hose?

The small hose with the filter (and fuel shutoff valve) goes from the tank to the fuel pump. The large hose is the fuel fill hose. The third hose, a small one, is the fuel return from the engine (or fuel pump) back to the tank, a common item on fuel injected engines. Should be another (small) hose going to the vent on the side of your boat.

To answer your last question, the hose with the filter (and shutoff vavle) in it provides fuel FROM your tank TO your engine. There would be no reason to filter fuel that was being returned to the tank, and the fuel shutoff valve would certainly not be located on the return line. The arrow on the filter should be pointed towards the engine (or fuel pump, more precisely) and away from the tank.

If he has a fuel injected engine, there is also a return line back to the tank coming from the fuel pressure regulator mounted on the fuel rail. This hose should not be filtered though, although someone (prior owner ?) might have installed a filter on this line. If that is the case, the arrow would point towards the tank.

edit; Whoa, how did I miss the post directly above mine. What RTS says. ^^^
