Replacing swim step rubber mat

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a couple questions that I’m hoping to get some help on. First, I have a 2007 VLX. What is the best polish to use on the stainless steel or chrome looking lettering (i.e. VLX and Malibu plus other chrome looking items) on the boat? Would it be chrome polish or something else?

Second question: I’m replacing the rubber mat on the swim step. The original one was chipped and badly nicked from wakeboard edges etc. from the original owner. The replacement mat is exactly like the original one and I was able to pull off the old mat and thoroughly clean the step. It’s ready to lay on the new mat. Problem is the backing on the new mat won’t peel off cleanly. It’s ripping and tearing and leaving really difficult to peel off pieces of the plastic backing stuck to the glue. Anyone have any thoughts about how to get the plastic backing to peel off cleanly and now get those stuck-on plastic backing pieces off without harming the glue that is on the back of the mat?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Maybe heat it up a bit.

I think there was a thread on Wakeworld a while back with pictures that went through the steps of changing the rubber on the swim platform. I think it was a Mastercraft, but the methods used should be similiar.
