Two Questions

Recommended Posts

First, what is the best way to remove mold/mildew from the underside of the cover? 08 factory cover already has signs.

Second, is there a way to remove the tow ball from the top of the illusion tower?

Thanks

I'm sure there is a way to remove the mildew, but I don't know how :)

On the ball removal. There is a cap on top of the ball. Use a screwdriver to remove the cap and you'll see the allen head bolt under there. I do believe there is a set screw too that you'll want to loosen. It's been a while since I installed mine so I may be wrong on the set screw.

For the mold/mildew, I would scrub your cover good with a brush and some detergent (car wash or dish soap would work fine). Let it dry in the sun for a few hours. If that doesn't do it, spray the mildew areas with a properly diluted solution of bleach (use cold water when mixing bleach solution). Let that sit for a few minutes, then scrub again with a detergent solution and rinse well. Let it dry in the sun again.

Mold takes hold when you have a moisture problem. If you don't get rid of the moisture, the mold will reappear.

Thanks, The mold is above the passenger and driver seat on the bottom side of the cover. I know that water is getting in between the Illusion tower and the cover. It runs down the side wall then soaks the carpet. The boat is on a lift all summer long outdoors. I've been able to keep the water from pooling there but have not figured out how to close the gap between the two. I've seen a few post where people have sowen in "socks" around the tower. Guess I'll have to look at that.

The best solution on multiple levels is to install a canapy cover on your boat lift. You need to be able to leave your cover crack open to get air circulation after a day of riding. If the inside of your boat is damp after a day of use and you seal up your boat with a cover, the next day the hot sun will cause that moisture to evaporate and then condense at the high points on the inside of your cover. A canapy cover will allow you to leave a portion of your cover open for a day or two so that the evaporated moisture doesn't get trapped inside the cover on a hot day.

I battled this all summer this year. I keep my boat on a lift during the summer also. This winter I am installing a canapy cover on the lift and I just swapped out my regular board racks for spinner racks so I can get in and out of my slip without hitting the boards/racks on the canapy posts once installed. It not a cheap solution, but it is the "best" solution.

Also, the factory covers are particularly bad for this problem. A sunbrella canvas cover will prevent moisture on the cover itself, but you will still have mild dew issues inside the boat because a sunbrella cover still doesn't allow sufficient air circulation to dry out a damp interior.

It is unfortunate that I can't add a sun top to the lift. Anybody add cover vents to their factory covers.

My cover came with vents. It's a commercial sewing cover I believe. Seems to do ok, but I live in a desert, so moisture normally isn't an issue.
