Weight of oil for a Monsoon II

Recommended Posts

I just read the "winterizing" instructions someone posted. They were great to say the least however.

The instructions said to use 15 W 40 oil

My manual on my 98 Monsoon II states 20 W 50 oil.

I am just curious, did the specs change?? Is it that critical between a 20 W 50 and 15 W 40?

My buddie has an I.O. Merc 350 and his manual says 15W40

I have been using 20W 50.

My lifters can be heard on occasion. I was considering going to 15 W 40

15/40 is the oil to use.

Honestly for a boat application I don't think it is allll that critical. There are plenty of very retentive folks around here that don't stray from one word of the bible.. er.. manual so if you're one of them.. follow the book

With that said, I thought straight 40w was the "offical" weight to use - but what do I know

15W40 has always been the spec oil for the Monsoon engine.

Straight 40 Weight is for Hammerhead & 8.1 L engines

Are you sure your hearing "lifter noise" Indmar's injectors are incredibly loud so most of the time that ticking noise you are hearing is the fuel injectors coil firing off. If you are having lifter noise, i would have the top end of your motor looked at. You might have a tulip'd valve or bad valve retainer, when valves get sloppy on these motors it's a matter of time before something breaks. With that much horse power they can't have too much lash.

Hope this helps

The 1998 Manual for the Monsoon II calls for 20w50...so I would consider that the spec oil at the time. Now, they've changed it to 15w40 since then but I don't know when that was.
