Help with installing prop

Recommended Posts

Well , Just got the new prop Acme 1273

The original prop came off easy but the new prop will not slide up the shaft enough to get the nut on.

Do I need to tap the key in to the shaft first?

It looks like it should go but I cannot get it up the shaft

Help - this is my first prop change.

Wild guess...... are you putting it on backwards? The hole is tapered....... the side of the prop facing the front of the boat is larger than the back.

First, check the prop key to make sure it is not buggered up and that it is sitting in it's groove

where it is supposed to.

Then, lube the prop shaft with lubricant of choice (plumbers grease, for instance) and slide it

up the shaft so that the groove in the prop hub lines up with the key (maybe easier if key is

rotated to the twelve o'clock position). Make sure the "Acme 1273" is facing back towards

the nut. If you're doing all of this already and it still won't go, you've got me stumped as well.

My guess, though, is that there is something wrong with the shape or position of your prop

key. You shouldn't have to tap the key into the shaft. If it's not misshaped, it should

slide right into the groove.

Is it OK to sand the key a little?

I looked and there were some bright brass scrapes on the key I just thought that was from removing the prop

Yes, it is okay to remove small amounts of material from the key. I think a file would do a better job. I put the key in a vice and used a rag so not to mar the key. Then I used a file to lightly dress the key so that it fits into the keyway.

My guess is that this is your problem. Hope this helps.

Sorry guys I did not know that the key had different widths on the two sides.

I took off the prop and tried to slide the key into the slot on the prop and it would only go in on one side, when I turned it 90 it would not fit which was the way I had it on the boat.

I put that side in the shaft slot and wow perfect, the prop slid all the way up to my mark on the shaft

Thanks Again - cant wait until the weekend to try the new prop loaded down
