Sea strainer

Recommended Posts

I bought a 1'' sea strainer from West Marine. I looked on Bakes marine and they sell 1.25 inch, will it make a big difference? Also, where should it be mounted? The hose is not very flexible. Anyone have pics of theirs?

Hose is always measured by I.D. not O.D.

Your raw water intake hose is 1¼" (I.D.). The 1" strainer will work fine just get 1" NPT to 1¼" hose barb fittings and you're golden. A 1¼" pipe nipple will not fit inside 1¼" hose.

I installed a 1" intake strainer on my sporty. Pic's are in my albums. I'm too lazy tonight to link them. Sorry.

I bought mine from my dealer but it came with 1.25" straight connectios. I replaced them with 90 degree fittings and installed it with the inlet side down and outlet side up. This way I just had to cut the inlet hose, installed a tube 90, use a portion of the hose that I cut off to connect the tube 90 to the inlet of the filter and then connected the outlet to the impeller intake.

I close coupled my filter to the impeller intake so it would not rattle when the boat is moving.

I did this 2 years ago and my heater works better and I don't get junk in my transmission cooler.
