From what I have read most people like to skate about 2 mph slower than they do when they board. This seems to hold true for my nephews. Personally, when I skate I ride at about 20 vs. 24 on a wakeboard. The increase speed will make carving more fun and when you try to ollie it will give you more pop.

You don't need any ballast or wedge for skating, IMO.

Here is a good resource for getting started. http://www.wakeskating.com/tricks/trick_tips.php

I started wakeskating quite a bit this year. Just as Stewart said, usually 2 MPH slower than your regular wakeboard speed is a good place to start.

I skate at 20 MPH behind my '05 VLX with no ballast or wedge, and the wake is nice with a lot of surface area to play around on.
