hit submerged log

hit a submerged log. prop is toast for sure, going to have it repaired, & have an acme 525 on the way. question is, the prop doesn't spin nearly as easy by hand as it did. it wasn't a very big log, so i would be surprised if the shaft was bent. what do you think, put the new prop on, when it gets here, & go test to see if there is any vibration. or am i screwed for sure? the closest dealer isn't close at all, so i can't just take it over & have them check it out.?

I would put the new prop on and test it... If you turn the shaft and it is hard to turn part of the rotation and then turns easy the rest of the way then you may have a problem but if it is hard the whole way around you're probably ok.

Remember that the bushing in the strut needs to be wet, or turning prop will be hard. I would think that if it's hard to turn (after spraying water or WD40 into strut bushing), the strut may be bent to one side and putting stress on the shaft. Check to see if shaft is in line with rudder, or bent off to one side. Should be in line. If not, have strut straightened or replaced. If just a little offline, test it out and if no vibrations on the water, I would not sweat it.

I've had mine straightened; they simply bolted it down, put a bar in it, and wrenched it back in line. Was a good machine shop....don't know if I'd attempt it. New strut is about $216 at dealer here.

Good luck, and watch out for those logs. I am the log king of Houston, so I feel your pain!

thanks guys- it is equally hard to turn all the way around. to take off strut, do you take off prop, & then unbolt & slide it off shaft? seems like that would do it. love skiing at yellowtail canyon, tooo many logs this year though!

Take the prop off...unbolt the strut from the hull...then slide it off the shaft. Be sure to use plenty of silicon sealant when you rebolt the strut after straightening or replacing.
