was wondering what pump i should buy for my boat

had a friend change the oil on it last fall with me (used his pump).

was wondering what others are using.

not afraid to pay a little more for the correct one...plan to use it for a while.

thanks!

If you have time just drop the drain hose down centre bung hole using bucket to collect the oil, leave to drain overnight and then no need for a pump Clap.gif

I have the Moeller 4 liter extractor and it has worked great for my engine and tranny. About 65 bucks and widely available. Do a quick search and you should find plenty of places to purchase it from.

I use the little unit you see in the left of this photo. Very versatile and I use it for other vaccum tasks too. Its a good unit.

Too old of boat.

You dipstick may have threads on the top for a Mercuiser style pump. If thats the case I would use one they work great. Used to have that setup.

don't bother IMO. you likely don't use it enough that you can't spare the few hours it takes to drain out naturally. I've never used one in 15 years and dont see the need.

His motor most likely doesn't have a drain hose based on the age. Are you suggesting it drain naturally into the bilge.

Perhaps we should ask if the boat has a drain hose for sticking out of the boat's drain hole, or if maybe he's just preferring to keep his boat in the slip/water when changing the oil so he doesn't have to pull it out of the water each time. Dontknow.gif

to my knowledge, my 89 sunsetter w/ the mercruiser 350 (Blue Water Inboard) doesn't have a drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. I think you can only 'suck' the oil out.

Last year (i've only winterized the boat once) i just let her warm up on the fake-a-lake and sucked the oil out. i think it might be better to drain from the bottom (if possible). seems like the bottom drain would clear any suspended solids, carbon, residue, etc. out better than than vacuum routine.

how often do all of you drain and replace tranny fluid?

If it does have a sump bung and doesn't currently have a hose I personally borrow/hire a pump and fit a new drain hose while it's empty. Easy as next oil change :-)

my '79 had a drain hose, and every other inboard I've had does too, just assumed these merc's did?

My Merc has a drain hose (94 Euro F3)
