Trailer hitch height

How high should the hitch be for a SMP double axle trailer ? I measured between the tandem wheels from the ground to the bottom of the frame 18". Should the top of my hitch, where the ball connects be the same height ? Currently when I attach the boat bottom of the frame is 14" off the ground. If I turn the hitch over and re attach the ball I will be at 17". My tow vehicle is a 2004 GMC Denali XL.

i would take a level out and place it over the duals and place the hitch accordingly to the level bubble. You dont want to have too much weight on either of the tires for towing due to wear etc.

ps they make hitches that are basically straight so when you turn them over they are not 3 inch increments of adjustment.

Worked at UHAUL before I became a doctor and we always sold a drawbar that set the ball at 17 inches from the ground... Biggrin.gif

I was running with a low hitch for a while. finally got my rollers on the trailer, and now the hitch is a touch high - but it needs to stay that way in order to hook up the boat due to the slope of my drive going down to the garage door. otherwise I can't get the trailer jack wheel around...

don't have a dmp trailer but my '03 xl denali has it's hitch in the "up" position giving me about 17". Since the ground is rarely level, measure front and back while unhooked and adjust so that the trailer is level. then measure the hitch to see where it should be. Then with a couple people sitting on the back of the yukon to simulate toung weight measure for the hitch. Reminder for you, the denali's have autoride, which levels the truck for you so you'll want to have the key on during all this.

The 2 key idea's above are

1 Trailer should be as close to level as you can get.

2 Reminder for you, the denali's have autoride, which levels the truck for you so you'll want to have the key on during all this.
