how much should i smoke

Recommended Posts

my '00 sunsetter was smoking from the exaust a little bit today. enough to where when i was towing a rider i could still see it as it was coming up from underneath the ski platform. i think it may just be exaust fumes, it wasn't really thick or anything kinda smelt like fuel. it only happened when i was getting on it b/c i had the wedge down and was towing, nothing when i was at idle or even putting along. what do i need to fix? or is it just running a little rich and no big deal?

thanks for any input.

That can happen when parts ware, especially if you have a few hundred hours. could be worn valves and guides or rings. try running a heavier weight oil it might help cut down just a bit on the smoke signals your sending to your rider and help you make it another summer. it couldn't hurt.

I had a similiar problem, ended up not being smoke, it was actually steam. Check your temperature gauge, mine was not hot but was slightly higher than normal, a little above 160 degrees. Confusing part was the Boat ran great. I even paid Skiers Pier $85 to tell me nothing is wrong and "the boat runs great". Steam came out only when I was running hard, also steam was only coming from one side. Found that part of the water pump impeller came apart an got jammed in the heat exchanger for the transmission restricting the cooling water flow. Good luck.
