Good Slalom Ski?

Malibu Crew,

I am 16 and slalom skiing is my sport of choice. I do wakeboard and kneeboard occasionally but it is always minimal. Slalom skiing is becoming harder for me because I am being pulled from deepwater with a 85hp outboard Cry.gif This winter we are planning on ordering a 2009 vtx!! Yahoo.gif Since we will be getting a new boat it will help with my slaloming tremendously since one of my biggest problems have become getting up. I also havent been able to cut hard all the way through both wakes yet, most of the time when I get over the first I start decelerating before I hit the second mound.

I have been slaloming on a outdated Obrien World Team for 5 years now and am ready to move up to a good course ski. I dont want a Goode or some really high end ski just something that will bite when I want to turn. I have been looking at Connely f1x, It seems to be a good middle of the road ski. I havent made it through the course yet and again part of it is the boat and part is that we dont have a depth finder and dont know how deep the water is. In part of that creek where the course is I was able to stand up and it barely came to my knees. Any suggestions for a ski?

Now on to the boat. We want the wedge but can you remove it when you dont want it on there. I read that it give 400- just over a thousand pounds when engaged. Well, 400 pounds for a slalom skier is quite a bit if wake to ski behind. If it cant be removed when not wanted then we really dont need the wedge at all.

Our color scheme will hopefully be reuben and black...Anybody got pictures of their rig with this scheme so we can get a few ideas?

As far as options and motor go it will be LOADED

Thanks!

The wedge does not give any downforce while in the up position, so you won't have to remove it to ski. As far as a ski goes there are so many skies out there that are so far above the average skier that I think that the best way to go is to demo skies until you find one you can't live without. If you need a little more poop in your boat to get up until you get a stronger boat, my wife used to do a slow circle around me to pick up just a little speed and then she would just pull me right out.

Doubtful she'd appreciate that... Tongue.gif

Make sure the VTX is on the cut diamond hull, the RLXI would be a better choice if you want to ski the course imho.

I learned to get up on one behind a 15' with a 50HP o/b. Believe me, I feel your pain! Cry.gif

Slider is right on - demo skis if you have a shop near by. If you can't demo, hook up with the other folks around you for their feedback, as well as us here. My 16 y/o daughter loves her HO Odyssey. My HO Vengeance is pretty sweet. They're both about 3 years old now. I'm more into boarding now, but still like to carve it up with the skinny stick early AM.

Many others will chime in to help you spend your money. Thumbup.gif

You will have lots of people chiming in...

How much do you weigh? Do you ski in the course now? Do you have one available?

I'd guess not too much course time with your current boat.

If you can, get some coaching & you'll likely improve pretty quickly.

The F1X is a 'slightly shaped' ski & better for slower speeds (up to 34 MPH). Similar skis are the Radar Senate & HO Nitro.

If you're not a heavy weight, one of the softer lay-up versions of the top end skis might work well - and will not break the bank. HO System8, Radar Annex, Connelly Concept, etc. They likely turn harder, but not be too unforgiving and are typically available on ski-it-again for much less than new.

It will definitely be cut diamond. Mother hen has got to have a V-drive. Dad wanted and wants a RLXI, but we are going to settle with a vtx because it has more room and from the wake pics we see it is still smooth wakes.

Get a used Connelly Rocket. Now that's a ski that will bite HARD when you turn. Have fun!

if the water is up to your knees you better be careful running the boat, let alone skiing there.

Obrien Siege is a good middle of the road ski too. get good highwrap binders and the right size ski!

Get the wedge, as you will want it sometime down the road. It does not affect the ski wake when in the up position. Get the Diamond hull, it skis great.

As for the ski, If I were in your shoes, I'd try to find a used Connelly Concept, or KD 7000. Those are great skis for your skill level, and are course capable, but not too expensive.

As for color - Sangria and Black, of course:

Trust me, you are not settling. That boat rocks. At least that what I hear..... Whistling.gif

I just traded in my 05 RLXi for an 08 VTX with the diamond hull. I couldn't be happier. Also, I ski an 05 Connelly F1x with double vision bindings and am so happy with it, I've not changed it out yet.

I have a slightly used Rocket (66") if any one is interested!

Obrien Siege is a good middle of the road ski too.

Plus1.gif I just won one. Took it out for a spin and it turns very easy. Mine didn't have a wing on the fin though so every time I pushed the ski hard I'd end up blowing out the tail. Shocking.gif Provided some entertainment for Spaznoook so it's all good. Can't see giving up my Monza for it though. No.gif

yea I definitely want somthing with that extra fin....By the way I love that signature although I am not a McCain fan either...I was fred thompson 08 but that obviously fell through maybe something better will come along in 2012!!

Unless you're skiing above 32mph and shorter than 22 off...you're really not going to need the wing. Without it, you'll have to learn how to manage your speed going into the turn (which is a good thing). Then once you start skiing at 34+ you can put it back on.

Ya, I'm sick of voting for the least objectionable. :( But if it's McCain or a socialist...I guess I'll vote McCain.
