Fuel Pump Screen

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 RLXI with the Monsoon, and the boat was running a little rough today. In the past the pump had started to squeal but improved after changing the fuel filter. Every now and again the boat smells like it is running rich. I had read about checking the screen in the fuel pump to see if it is clogged. So I pulled off the fuel line leading into the pump and used a mirror to check the screen. The problem is that I did not see a screen. I did see what looked like a wire mesh that was on the outside edge of the interior of the pump, but the center was wide open. For anyone who has cleaned the screen, does it cover over the entire interior or just the interior edge.

Also, does anyone know what the part number for the K&N Air filter for my boat would be. One last question, is there any preferred brand of spark plug that everyone uses?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, I have changed it. it is sort of coned shaped and covers the entire interior. Are you sure you saw a hole and not black silt. It is a very fine metal mesh and it catches little pieces of (usually black) silt. To get it out I used a toothpick (didn't want anything sharp that might puncture the screen). Reach up and lightly touch the screen then bring it down until it catches the edge then slowly and carefully and delicately pry it down until it's out. It is best to work around the different sides, instead of pulling it down from just one side. Avoids damaging the screen. Clean it with a solvent, I used carb cleaner, then let it fully dry. Blowing out the liquid helps it dry faster, then reinstall. This helps eliminate fuel pump squeal(as long as the pumps not bad) and also helps stop the black soot from exhaust on the stern and adjacent sides of the hull.

I've taken mine out a couple of times. I have found it easiest to actually remove the pump to remove the screen. It is on the bottom side of the pump or the intake side. I'm sure you could do it without removing the pump but I have not tried. The screen comes out relatively easily but be careful with it. I have not been able to locate a replacement for the screen. If anyone out there knows of one please speak up.

I did not take the pump out, but when I looked using the mirror it did not appear that the screen existed. I did see what looked like fine mess, but it looked like it was just on the outside edge. I guess it is possible that it was so dirty that it looked like it was missing. I was thinking about just taking the pump out, but wanted to start with the easy process first. I may just need to take the pump out to get a better view.

Thanks for the info

The first time I took my pump out we did not notice a screen because it was so clogged. Upon closer examination, voila! There was a screen.

Mino, your K&N air filter is a permanent type, not a replacement type. You can get a cleaning/oiling kit from any automotive store.

Is there one on a 01 vlx? I have changed the furl filter plenty of times but never have cleaned or done anything on the fuel pump.

If you have the fuel pump on the side of the engine then that aluminum canister should have a wire mesh screen on the bottom of the pump where the fuel line is attached. It is hard to see unless you take off the pump, I just carefully felt around and then slowly worked it down and out.
