Wake Surfing with a Wakeboard

My wife and I are interested in trying wakesurfing but do not want to make the investment in a wake surfing board until we see how we like it. I was wondering if we could try it using our wakeboards. Will that work at all? Are there any special saftey issues?

I personally would say no for a beginner it will not work. Just breakdown and buy a board you will love it (it took a while for my wife to warm up, now she is really digging it). If you end up hating it, you can sell it for probably 80-90% of what you bought it for.

If you're a really small person you may be able to do it, but I know that I couldn't stay up on a wakeboard. I'm 6'1" 230 lbs and the wakeboard doesn't have enough buoyancy to keep me above the water at surf speeds.

it can be done..

im 6'3" 180 lbs... i can do it on my wakeboard. i ride the 140 Roam from hyperlite.

im sure there is a certain skill needed however..

just invest in a wakesurf. Hyperlite broadcast 5'6"

If you have a 2003 Sunscape your going to need ballast to sink that boat. You'll also need to get that boat to list to surfside. Rule of thumb rubrail touching water from stern to about backof driver seat when you are underway at surfing speed. Weight and list is how you accomplish this. Board wise Obrien has a new Wakesurf that is 4'6" and a 5' version called the Alias. It is center fin only, so a little loose, but goob bouyancy for a mass produced board. For around $200 cheapest wakesurfer I've seen. For more info. on Wakesurfing try Wakeoutlaws.

I've done it on a wakeboard, but those are not as fun or easy as a surfer board. I've also found it can discourage a first timer. It's much easier on a board designed for surfing. More buoyancy, feet free on the board to control speed, better fin tracking at slow speeds, etc.
