Do you secure paddle wheel on long trip while towing?

Crew, does anybody secure the paddle wheel on the hull ( tape it down) when towing for a long period of time. I heard this guy say he did it to prevent wear on the paddle wheel. Never did it up to now, but would like to get some input. USA.gif

Depends on how far your traveling, but I don't think there would be all that much movement anyways.

I REALLY doubt it will move at all, but who cares if it does? It spins whenever the boat is moving in the water, and i guarantee it spins a lot faster then.

The rebuild kit is under $10, so if you have to rebuilt it every 10 yrs, does it really make it worth it to tape it under the boat while on the trailer?

Heck, leave it taped, and you'll have no wear.

Just doesnt' make sense ot me.

It's not like it adds extra mileage like pulling a car...? This is the first time I hear this...

Perfect PAss states in their manual that if you are tavelling over 60 miles your should pull the paddlewheel up or tape it. It does spin under the boat- that's what it's designed for! On the highway the speed will be much greater then it will ever see under your boat.

That's what I know... FWIW

Go figure... guess we should be doing it then... Dontknow.gif

I think the issue is that the water cools the bearings in the paddlewheel. When it spins from wind while driving, there is no cooling and the bearings can burn up.

My dealer never mentioned anything like that, and I don't believe it states it anywhere in the manual. There is a maintenance for them when the boat is seasoned for the winter, but that is only if it's not stored indoors Dontknow.gif

I don't worry about it, I'll have someone sit on the trailer next out and see if it actually does move while towing :)

Yup. I just put tape over mine for highway travel.

Easiest just to pull it up and out from bilge. Takes two minutes.

Yep...just what he said. Unscrew the top and pull it into the bilge area (if DD) if your towing long distances.

I tape mine for the longer trips. If I am just going an hour or so away, I leave it. 5 years now and no problems with it thus far.

Mine came with this nifty little insert so when I pull the paddle wheel I can stick something in the hole. Thereby preventing a catastrophe from leaving an open hole in the hull. Now, truth be told, she stays on the water all season and goes a mile from the ramp to the garage, so I don't really worry about it. The only long trip was from the stealer, uhhh dealer, to the lake ~120 miles and no problem.

mine has that little plug too. It is so if you forget to put the paddle wheel back and put the boat in you don't start filling her up with water... Whistling.gif

Actually its so if you tear up the paddle wheel you can replace it with the plug so you don't sink :P

Jack I trailered way more miles before I was 20 than you have in your entire prehistoric life....never had a paddlwheel burn out on me.

Honestly pull apart your paddlewheel and look at that high tech "bearing".

Hey, hey. Simmer down. I was just yankin' yer chain. I'm not going to bother pulling apart the paddlewheel, but I'd bet it's on a mini-axle.

And I wouldn't contest your towing-miles superiority. Back when I started towing, the trailer wheels were still square and made of stone. Punk. Shocking.gif

no hostility here, just giving you a hard time, your skin is plenty thick and wrinkled isn't it...

but honestly that "bearing" is nothing more than a little shaft with the paddlewheel on it.
