4th of July - Help! Engine Stalling and Speedometer Stopped Working

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 VLX with Monsoon 340 hp engine with 100 hours on it. Yesterday, the speedometer started failing and was off 10 mph easy. Later in the day, it sputtered and at times, i couldn't go faster than 10 MPH overall. Later, the boat worked fine 2 or 3 times and then sputtered again and now the speedometer doesn't work at all. I don't really care about the speedometer as i do getting the boat to work. Any ideas? Lots of family coming for our first 4th of July with a boat and we are in trouble.

Appreciate any insights. I have already called the local dealer, but not sure if he will be able to get out and fix ASAP.

Thanks for your insights!

Fuel filter would be a great place to start ... odd symptoms. It would be fast easy and cheap. Maybe bad or water in the gas.

Yes.gif Fuel filter would be the first thing that I'd change. You could get a siphon hose down on the bottom of the tank and pull some fuel to make sure that you don't have excessive water or gunk in it but I'd start with the filter. Get one or two extras for use during the week-end in case the new one gets clogged up too. They don't go bad and you will eventually use them anyway.

Any idea what your temp and oil pressure were doing at the time?

I would change the fuel filter also, as far as the speedo, crawl under the boat and spin the paddle wheel to see if it spins easily or maybe something is jammed in it. Then if it spins easy check the cable coming out of it, beyond that I'm not sure. I think you can unscrew the speedo sensor from inside the bilge also but not 100% sure on that.

Good luck, hopefully it is an easy fix.

If the paddle wheel isn't the problem (or even if it is and you can't get it fixed in time) you could head down to Best Buy or Target or where ever and pick up an simple handheld GPS for about $100 and then you'd have a speedo for the week-end and a way to re-calibrate your built-in once it's fixed. thanks for the prompt response....i will look into the fuel filter....seems to be whatever everyone is saying....really appreciate the fast response...the paddle is broken on my speedometer....i put a new lift in and the v-bonks were too close...they are separate issue.....

do you fill up at the marina? I'm assuming it's bad gas and or maybe fuel filter too. Take off the fuel filter and see if you can easily blow thru it. If you have a hard time, then you for sure need to replace it. Get some Heat and add it in the tank. I have also used denatured alchohol as well.

Fuel filter is screwed into the wall on the left side of the v-drive
