RPM Gauge not reading correctly

Recommended Posts

Today, in the middle of the day on the lake, I notices that my RPM gauge on my 97 Sunsetter bottomed out at 1000 rpm when at idle. IT would go to 0 when starting but then right back to 1000 rpm. Everything runs great it is just reads 1000 rpm higher then it is running. Reads 3000 rpm at about 15 to 20 mph ( it is not at that high of RPM) The idle sounds fine to my ear, as well as at running speed.

My real question is this something i need to worry about or something I can take my time and just keep an ear on?

Not sure on your year boat, but some tachs have a switch on the back of the gauge. The switch is used to select 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. If you have this, switch it back and forth a few times then reset it to 8. See if that helps and keep us posted.

We had a similar problem with the tach in our '96, it ended up needing to be replaced. However, our dealer was not able to locate a tach that matched the stock red and white gauges in our '96, so they installed a blue and white teleflex generic tach. The stock one was a 6,000 RPM tach, and the new one is a 7,000. I liked the 6K tach better

Sooo, if anyone comes across a working 6K tack with red graduations and white numbers... let me know...
