Engine gets hot (sometimes)

Recommended Posts

Ok, the engine started running hot (intermittently) when I drove through some weeds. I replaced the impeller and thermostat (160 degree). The motor runs at 180 degrees usually, but some days it jumps up to 240. Then goes up and down fluctuating between 160 and 240. WHat temp should it be at with the 160 degree thermostat? Not sure why this is happening. BTW its a 1999 sunsetter with the monsoon EFI.

Hmmmmm, I am not sure what could be causing the problem. BTW mine has fresh water pick up, not a closed cooling system. Could it be the sensor, or is that unlikely the way its acting?

mine isn't a closed system either. you may have something still blocking the water flow like like something in the pick-up or maybe old impeller parts. i am not sure. someone else with more knowledge will probably chime in and help you out better

Since you already replaced the thermostat you either have a parial blockage or a bad temp sensor. Make sure the thru-hull is clear, check the hose directly in front of the impeller for weeds, check the condition of your impeller, check your tranny cooler for pieces of an old impeller,...if all that is clear then change the temp sender.

EDIT: you should be running a fairly consistent 160°.

where is the temp sensor located and where can I buy a replacement? Does the local bot shop have them?

I would start by pulling the hose from the raw water pump to the tranny cooler. More than likely you have some weeds or parts to an impeller in there. There is a screen at the inlet to the tranny cooler that probably needs cleaned out. You should be able to pull them out with your fingers.

If that doesnt work then I would look at the temp sensor.

On my 310 carby it's on the starboard side of the thermostat housing. I don't remember right off the top of my head if it is in the same place on a Monsoon, though I would assume so.

we drive through a weedy area to get to our dock. A few times a year the engine starts to run a little hot. I pull the hose off the tranny cooler and stick my finger up in it and peel the crud off the screen. Fixes it every time for me.

At what temp will damage be caused to the motor? Also, is there a warning buzzer that turns on at a certain temp??

Ok, I pulled the hoses to the tranny cooler and there was a small amount of seaweed in there. I also used a bbq skewer and ran it through all the holes and found one was plugged with a piece of old impeller. I used a fake a lake and brought it up to 160 degrees and it seemed to hold there. Not sure how it will do on the lake.

Thanks for all the help
