92 sunsetter mercruiser starting problems

Recommended Posts

I appreciate all of the help so far. The info age is great. Anyway I am having problems starting my 350 Mercruiser. I have essentially tuned it up. I am having problems getting it started cold and warm. I will always start ,but it is tricky. It only has 320 hours on it. It is putting out a small amount of black smoke. All of my more mechanically inclined ski and non skiers think its either the timing or in need of carb rebuild. Any ideas. I am in Ft. Worth area. I think I am going to just take it to Texas Mastercraft. Right now I just have been trying to save money ha ha and learn a little about inboard engines, but I think taking it in would probably be in my best interest. If there is any advice on the 350 ski Mercriuser though then bring it on my brothers.

Sounds like its rich. Maybe your floats need adjusting or replacing. You can order a carb rebuild kit and DIY. It's pretty simple.

I've got the Mercruiser 350 Magnum Ski, and went through the same thing. It was the carb and timing. Since I got a really good deal on the boat, I opted to go with a new carb from Summit Racing. It was $350 with shipping. When I priced out a complete overhaul kit that included ALL internal parts for my old carb., It came out to over $150, so I went new. When you check the timing don't forget to short out the Thunderbolt IV ignition. There should be a wire coming from the distributor or the module attached to the distributor that has a plug in it. Allyou need to do is use a alligator clip and short it out to the engine block. Have the ignition key off ,then restart and then time. The carb was an Edelbrock Marine 600 CFM.
