lost top end??

just purchased a 1997 malibu echelon about a month ago and it seems to be having a problem. when trying to run full speed the boat gets to about 3/4 throttle and quickly looses power after that. bring it back to 3/4 and it starts to pull hard again. the boat has the carburated 350. i dont know where to begin. any ideas? fuel filter? fuel/water separator?

I have a 94 Euro F3 Sunsetter. It started losing top end just before the cylinder ring blew. From my experience I would make sure you have high octane gas in the boat and no water in the oil..... When we pulled my engine there was 2 gallons of water in the oil pan. Maybe change the oil and trans fluid. Keep in mind I am not very mechanically inclined..... Hope this helps

also i when i got the boat i changed the oil and thats it....could it maybe be plugs or wires. maybe i need a fuel/water separator.

Old thread, but describes pretty closely a problem that I am having on my 89 Sunsetter. When I reach wide open throttle the power noticeably cuts out. I then back the throttle slightly off, it revs normally, and resumes regular power/speed again.

This is the orig motor, which has passed a compression test. I did replace the fuel line from the tank to the filter, but not the filter to the pump. It has the mechanical fuel pump and I believe it's the orig pump.

Should I start with replacing the pump?

I would check to see what your fuel pressure is. There is a thread somewhere that gives normal operating fuel pressures.
