Steering Slop

Recommended Posts

Well, it's time to install a new steering cable - steering is quite stiff. I've also got about 1/8 of a turn of slop at the wheel. Will a new cable help this at all, or should I be looking to install a new steering box as well? The boat is a '96 with the original components.

i just replace my cable the other day. mine has so hard to rotate. mine is back mount(rack and pinion) i cant remember the steering feeling this good. but the steering wheel side is just the pinion side. should be ok. the rack(the cable side). is what went bad on mine.

don't know setup with a 96 but if it's rack and pinion a new cable will most likely correct any small amounts of slop.

If there is a tiny bit remaining just loosen the rack mounting bolts, twist the rack in little in the mounts and retighten Thumbup.gif

Mine is the rotary style steering box. Will a new cable help correct the slop in this style as well??
