Kneeboard help

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I picked up a kneeboard from craigslist today. I would like to put a fin on it so it tracks straight. I want my 2 year old to be able to lay on it and not worry about it sliding around.

Any thoughts as to what I could put on it to make it track. I have some old slalom fins, but they seem really big for what I want to do.

ideas?

I forgot to mention. Drilling slots, holes or other damage to the board is completely acceptable. This is just a tool to get him started.

What about some cheap wakeboard fins? Some self tapping screws, silicone sealant and you're all set.

Just drill a couple holes, like what's on a wakeboard and screw whatever size fin you want to the kneeboard.

If it's a compression molded board, you can drill all the way through it. Those fins that are linked appear that they would do the trick. Maybe use some JB Weld or something to mount them to both sides on the back of the board vs having screw heads that might scratch the 2 yr old. I can't tell if the posts on the fins are their for screws or not.

Couple of suggestions that were offered to me to get my kids started on kneeboards... pull them around the yard on the grass on the board first, then move them into very shallow water along the waterline just running and pulling them for them to get the feel of it. Might also give you a feel for how the new fins track. You'll also probably want to be in the water behind the boat with them the first time just to ease any discomfort and provide moral support. You probably already thought of this though, so please excuse my unintended ignorance.

What kneeboard do you want to add fins to? They are not necessary, especially for a 2 year old. Kneeboards track just fine without fins because your center of gravity is low. The only thing that the fins will do for your two year old is tire them out sooner. Fins will create drag, and if it's a plastic/thick kneeboard, it will already have more than enough drag.

Go to a surf shop and buy replacement body board fins. Or a toy or sports shop and buy complete cheapo body board that has fins. Use duct tape as forces at low speed will be very low.

Reality though is for a 2 yr old he'll be so light you'll be towing on a very short rope at 5mph (or less) and fins aren't really going to do much.
