1999 sunsetter LXI "Packing nut"

Hello, I am a new member to this forum and am looking at my Boat.. I see my transmission and the prop shaft as it extends through the boat to the back ,I see where it goes through the floor to the underside of the boat. There is a large brass nut but I only see one. Is this what gets tighten. I take on quiet of bit of water ..I just want to locate it, so when I put it in the water next time I will no what to adjust (tighten). Is it possible this model with the 325 Monsoon Motor and a direct drive has a shaft that does not get adjusted. So would I then just tighten the nut. the owners manual shows nothing....any help we be greatly appreciated.

yep, that's it. I haven't adjusted mine in awhile, but my recollection is that I needed 2 wrenches, one to hold one nut and the other to turn the one that adjusts, but I could be remembering incorrectly.

Remember that you WANT that joint to leak just a bit, the water is what lubricates the packing material in there. Do not tighten it until it doesn't leak! Again, going off recollection here, you want something like 1 drip every 5 seconds or so. Do a search on the site for "packing nut" and I'm sure you'll find what you need.

That's it. There is a large brass nut called a stuffing box. It has the packing rope in it.

There is also a thin brass (3/16" or so) nut away from your motor called a jam nut. It is used to put pressure on the big nut & keep it from loosening.

Make any adjustments in small increments - like 1/8 of a turn at a time.
