steering cable replacement - one little problem

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been reading a lot of the posts about replacing the steering cable. I am working on doing that but I can not seem to figure out how to release the steering cable from the rudder housing (the pivot point). I have removed it from the rudder itself. Someone posted that you loosen the chrome nut, however, when I turn that the entire cable twists and so that does not appear to be working.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The housing it is attached to will sometimes spin with it. grab the threads (black in color) with a pair of vice grips and loosen the large nut.

i did it in my 98, took about 4 hours or so. Hold onto the cable with some vice grips then undo that large silver nut (engine side, don't un-do the nut holding the pivot point going into the hydro box)

good luck with the prodject
