Rudder O-ring

Recommended Posts

Is this something I should be concerned about. Just a small piece of what looks to be an o-ring is protruding from rudder where it meets rudder housing. I am wondering if I put too much grease in the grease fittings last time I did it.

what you did is put too much pressure into the rudder housing area and blew the ring out.

i did the same thing on my boat last year...thought i was doing some "preventative maintenance" and ended up screwing it the seal up.

anyway, what you'll need to do...and it's a pain in the butt, is replace the seal.

you'll have to remove the bolts that hold the rudder in place--this will allow the rudder to drop free. if you have enough space between the rudder and trailer the rudder will drop free. if the rudder is resting against the prop guard area, you'll have to jack the back end of the boat up to remove the rudder.

once that's done, reassemble in reverse order--it helps to have a partner with getting the rudder set back in place/bolted in.

if you're not mechanically inclined, a trip to the dealer is in order as water will get into the rudder area and the lubricating properties of the grease will diminish.

Do you think I could drop the rudder and push the oring back in without getting a new kit?

Sorry man, but you're not going to be able to get the O ring in there unless the rudder is removed...it's just too tight in the area between the rudder shaft and the area where the O ring is at. Trust me...I thought and tried the same thing (just dropping the rudder down.) I figured I could just push the O ring back up in there if I was able to get a bit of space, but that wasn't able to be done.

Edit: The good news...if you do it yourself the O ring part is less than $10
