1995 Response shuts off

Recommended Posts

Hi

I own a 1995 response with a Mercury 350 magnum. This engine seems to have been some sort of early EFI attempt, in that it still has the carburator throttle body, but it has two electronic injectors streaming directly into it. Several years ago, it blew a head gasket and they had to be replaced. Some times, after the engine is warm it shuts off after a restart. This usually lasts anywhere from 20 mintues to 1 hour, then the boat runs fine. Well, now it has reduced power, so I compression tested it and found one cylinder with no compression. I blew air into the sprak plug hole and air was coming out of the carb. I tapped the intake valve and the air stopped, so I assumed a bent valve. I took the heads to the machine shop and told this guy the problem. He feels the fuel starvation issue is causing a head gasket problem. Have you heard of this problem on these engines. Has Mercury offered any solutions anyone knows of. I have tried to contact Mercury, but get left on hold until it disconnects me.

I appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thank you

I don't think the 350 Magnum was offered as a TBI back in 95. To get fuel injection, you had to step up to the Monsoon or Black Scorpion (??). Did you buy the boat used? If so, maybe the last owner removed the carb and installed the TBI as an aftermarket kit. If this is the case, maybe it wasn't installed correctly or the computer wasn't set up right.

They had the TBI merc's back then, look just like the 265 carb with a computer on the manifold,

Could be that merc fuel cell acting up, but the no start condition almost sounds like vapor lock, but never heard of that in a TBI engine.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not sure what to do at this point, but I'll keep trying.

Really appreciate the help though.

I believe in 95 they didn't offer the black scorpion, they had a 350 magnum ski MPI and TBI.
