Converting engine cover from single to 3 hatches

Recommended Posts

Behindtheboat

I have a 98 Sunsetter VLX with a single hatch engine cover (with the hydraulic lift). This is really sort of a pain if I want to use the storage on each side of the engine....I am considering converting to 3 hatches and was wondering if anyone has done this (pictures and prices would be awesome).

Thanks,

Dan

I'm sure it can be done, you can buy the 00 or 01 skins to match your interior then you'd just have to cut the hatch in 3 places, but I think on a 98' the support system may be a little different then the newer ones. Do you have a pic?

Seems like this has been discussed here in the past & done. Your hull is common with a newer one with 3 hatches, so you probably could buy the bases, foam, hinges.etc. in addition to the skins all from your dealer if you wanted. You will probably need to get the skins from "Chee"? because of the year, instead of your dealer. If you do a search on skins you will find his info & contact in case my mind changed his name.

Your boat is too old to go through the factory, but there is a guy named Chee Maou who works at the CA plant and has the templates for the older boats, the plus is you don't pay the dealer mark ups and he does excellent work. If you talk to the CA plant they will give your contact info to Chee.

Something like this: hatch gas strut conversion would be much easier than making a 3-piece deck, and makes the one-piece design much more functional.

That is nice....might be a better way to go.

Thanks!
