02 sportster steering cable length

Recommended Posts

I helped the girls across the lake change the steering cable in their sporty this weekend. I've done it in my LSV before so I knew how to do it. We had the old cable out and the new cable done in record time (under an hour!), BUT, as I went to hook the cable up under the helm, it seemed like there was a little too much cable and no where to put it all. It turns out the old cable was a 15' cable and the one that the parts guy gave them was a 16' cable. We were able to get it hooked up, and I kinda made some large 'S' bends in the cable under the floor to take up the extra length. The wheel turns easy and everything works fine. No one was real excited about the idea of having to do the whole job again with the correct cable, and making the 3+ hour round-trip back to the dealer to get the correct cable. The girls were going to talk to their dad before we went any further to see what he wanted to do.

Can anyone see a problem with having a cable that is a foot too long? Everything works fine and hooks up fine, there is just a little extra cable down in the bilge.

Thanks,

Chad

It will be fine. Usually you can bury some of the extra length up at the helm by making a nice long turn into the floor, or by what you did.
