impeller/muffler/plugs questions -5.7 mercruiser

Recommended Posts

i've got a mercruiser 5.7 with D-shaped impeller housing.

last weekend i replaced impeller and gaskets, tightened everything up.....should I have put any gasket sealant on the gaskets for the impeller prior to re-assembling it?

what is the spark plug gaps for stock 5.7 liter mercruiser (carby) I've got the standard NGK plugs....can 'I screw' up the timing by replacing the cap and rotor myself?

i'm replacing one of the fiberglass mufflers on my boat. the 45 degree bent was leaking (from a crack) and was flowing back into bilge.....anyway was planning on patching, but after removal, it was evident the piece needed to be replaced....DIM to the rescue. do I need any type if silicone for these seals as well? it's 3" pipe with hose clamps, rubber housing (exhaust and water).

any advice would be great!

thanks,

CR

no sealant on pump gaskets. you should pack some vasoline in the housing and around the impella not sure about your plug gap. no sealant on exhaust hoses

vasoline in the impeller? sounds like a great idea! is this necessary?

Not necesary, but makes it easier to install.

When stuck on the water, i use binding lube.

You won't screw up the timing changing the cap and rotor unless you somehow turn the distributor.

Change over one wire at a time and you'll be all set!
