My tranny will not shift into neutral...

Recommended Posts

I have a '90 sunsetter with a 5.7 mercruiser. I noticed the other day that even when I have my throttle in neutral the drive shaft/prop is still spinning. It doesn't even shift to neutral when you pull out the gear switch (next to the throttle). It will shift into reverse when its supposed to but I need to get this fixed before this weekend (BIG ski weekend for me and my buddies). I tried; you can't really take it out in this condition.

Any help is appreciated.

I would imagine the linkage is okay (however I haven't ruled it out), because it will shift into reverse. I've never dealt with this part of the boat so I'm not exactly sure what to look for.

Don't assume anything, disconnect the linkage at the tranny and try to put the boat into forward, neutral, and reverse. Pretty easy, it is a quick disconnect then you can just move the bracket forward and backward to grab forward and reverse.

Thanks...I'll give it a shot.
