Speedometer

Recommended Posts

I am new to this board and have a problem. We have a 2001 Malibu Sunsetter. Today at the lake the Speedometer just quit working all of a sudden. All of the other gauges are working. It just reads 0. I checked the cables behind the cluster and they are all hooked up.

What could cause this and what's the best way to diagnose it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Check your speedo paddle wheel under the hull. If you hit it while trailering or on your lift, or even if you beached it, the tabs coiuld have bent and stopped the wheel from turning, which will disable the speedo..

Not sure if your boat has a paddle wheel or a pitot tube. If it's got the paddle wheel, check it for

damage or debris that would prevent it from spinning.

If it's got a pitot tube, usually mounted off the transom, sometimes they can get flipped up and

out of the way of the water flow. If so, just flip it back down.

Sometimes they can get a small bit of debris caught in the tiny hole on the leading edge. You

may be able to see it and work it out with a wire.

Boat has pitot tubes, 03 was the first year for across the board paddlewheels.

Blow out the pitot tubes at the back of the boat with some compressed air and you should be fine.

Mine clog all the time. I use a medium size paper clip and shoves right thru. Quick and easy. I agree, mine also flip up sometimes. My lake has a lot of debris which can cause clogging or even cause the pickups to flip up.

If it quit working all of a sudden either something clogged the pilot tube or it got flipped up by something the boat hit. When this happens try backing up to clear off the tube. Sometimes you can get a weed on it and that will do the trick. I don't know if you boat has two pickups as my RLX does but if so there is a switch on the dash that allows you to switch back and forth between them. If it happens again try flipping the switch and seeing if you get a reading.

Thank You for all of your help. This is our first boat and we learn something new everyday. Hubby blew out the pilot tubes and it worked like a charm. Took it out again in our muddy lake and speedometer worked fine. He said that when he blew them out, all sorts of dirt came shooting out.

I have a slow drip coming from the area near where the pitot water tubes connect with a little black box. Any thoughts on how to fix this? thanks, Kevin
