Welcome mcmalibu!

OK, when I was out on Anderson 2 weeks ago I thought to myself, 'I've never seen so many Malibu's on any lake before.' Should have known I was jinxing the lake.

This sucks so bad. I hope they get this worked out. But I can't see how they can do it with boats like ours that take on water ballast.

ugh.

Zebra mussels larva is microscopic can Live in water for 3 weeks to 3 months depending on temp. Do you think we will stop the spreed with another government run program? Just thinking all the precautions put into place my not stop the spreed. Some of the invasive species are being moved by birds. With all the ballast in boats today I think it is just time.

I envision a Lake Davis all over again....

I agree the government programs are typically inefficient, whom else is going to step and prevent (hope) it. I'm not one for futile programs but it needs to be examined if there is anything that can be done, which is where we are at.

Hey Andy,

I was out there two Sundays ago and thinking the same thing about all the bu's.

The only thing I'm concerned about is those buggers getting inside my engine and clogging things up. I'm gonna drain the block and manifolds after every trip to any lake now.

Yes this is a potential major problem, but here is the question? What lakes have them right now? Why not close those lakes and then it won't be carried around. If this keeps up all the lakes will be closed and then what, your paying for a boat you can't use, the economy suffers more because we are not buying fuel, beer, gate passes into the lakes, etc..

I just don't think they are approaching this properly. I agree I don't want them in my motor or ballast tanks but what can we honestly do if we don't know what lakes have them and what lakes do. What can kill these things if they are found in the tanks?

Here's a pretty good explanation of the zebra mussels and potential management. http://www.sgnis.org/publicat/managers.htm

They say 1 part bleach to 10 parts water can kill them. Maybe we would need to use our flush pro for the engine and better yet the suction cup flusher underneath the ballast pump inlets to suck up the mixture.

Sounds like the closure is not permanent, and how many lakes have been effected
Temporary boating ban in all santa clara county reservoirs.

Thanks for the link and the info. I am curious if Boca, Stampede, or even Tahoe won't be effected as easily becasue of the cold water temps year round. I only go to a few lakes and havn't had any problems that I know of but I think next year when I winterize my boat I will pump some bleach in the tanks just to be safe. I would think that the heat from the motor would kill them if they are inside the water lines, that or they would be thrusted out when hammering it. might get into the habit of flushing the motor when I get home just to be safe.

Cold water isn't going to stop them. I have never seen a problem with the cooling system in a boat. My guess is the temp in the motor kills them. We now know some of our evasive spices are being spared by migratory birds remember if the larva is microscopic anything moving from lake to lake has a possibility of moving the spices. Working with a specialist I asked about shutting public lunch down is it worth wile ? His answer was you guessed it NO! If a body of water is in the flow down stream it will get it sooner or later. One good thing Its been like global warming and acid rain. It has not lived up to be as bad as Many have been predicting. They have seem to have stabilized in our lake but we sure have them.

Thanks for the info on the cold water, you would definately know since your lakes freeze every year, right? Whats the water temp back there?

I guess what I meant to say is, I was wondering if any other lakes have outside of our area have the same issue

  • 1 month later...

I just called today: 408-779-3634

They've changed their tune. They will allow ALL vessels, from ALL counties, now.

- This is a change, last month they weren't letting any vessels from San Benito County in at all.

But you have to go through an inspection - cost is an ADDITIONAL $7 per vessel.

Your boat must be DRY or they will ban you for 5 days.

= bilge, igloo areas, fat sacs, ballast tanks, etc. Must be dry or they won't let you on the lake.

Good news!!!!

A friend of mine told me that he saw a guy with 'wet life jackets' that was not allowed on the lake.

Make sure everything is DRY!

WOW, I guess he would have had to just been at another lake or maybe sprayed them off at home if he had wet life jackets, strange in this heat unless they were just damp.

Thanks, Good to know!

Hi, we failed a recent test at Anderson due to a couple of cup fulls of water coming out of the front tanks when they asked us to run the pumps, yes they will fail you for ANYTHING that is wet/damp, including jackets, wetsuits etc. Also, they will fail you for any water in the coolboxes so be aware

Ladies and Germs. Was on Lake Erie in 1993. Zebes were horrible. Perching was bad. We opened every perch we caught and their stomachs were full of Zebras. The Walleye were the same way. It did cause us sport fishing issues. In that area, back then, municipal water intakes were being occluded or restricted badly. I cannot imagine these things not causing trouble on any not heated water inlet.
