'06 with monsoon, black soot/carbon

Recommended Posts

Grabbed a couple of fuel filters as the dealer wasn't positive which one I needed and I hadn't even looked at it. They gave me 2 sizes of inline and one for another style. I took out my inline and was looking at the new one and they didn't match.

If you put the new one and the old one side by side with the arrows for fuel flow direction matching, one had the diverter plate and the other was open to the filter. I was a little confused so I looked at the smaller size inline the dealer game me that wasn't for my boat, that matched the other new one. So it looks to me like the one that came with the boat was a misprint from the factory. I took them both to the dealer to see which way it is supposed to go and they confirmed that the new one was correct and the old one was wrong.

So how about that? I can't say for sure if the boat is using less fuel or that the back is less dirty than it was, but I need to give it some time to burn the crap out, change the oil and see where we're at. Sounds like an easy and promising fix though.

When I bought my boat the thermostat had been removed. Will this cause the boat to run rich thus causing the soot on the rear transom?

so my fuel filter being in backward didn't seem to have much to do with this unless it caused something to start it off. Still running rich, rough and sooty. It goes in this week

Ok, I didn't want to post until I had it fixed and knew that it was fixed. It went to the dealer, fuel pressure regulator and all is well. I'm now running mid-grade all the time as advised in manual and by many on the crew plus the dealer. The dealer took great care of me! Tinus in Oconomowoc, WI always has and still did. They picked it up at the launch, I don't have a trailer, took it in and let me know what was up. They replaced the regulator, the plugs (they were blackened from this) the oil. The lake was closed because of high water so they also washed, acid washed and waxed the boat to get rid of the black soot while it sat around, and oiled up my teak platform so the thing looks new!

About half of the dent in the wallet that I expected and all is well!

I now have no soot and no plumes of exhaust when starting/stopping. I go through about half of the gas that I was going through and it runs better than ever. I really think it was an issue from the first days using the boat, but what can you do, it's been 150 hours.

and one more thing, I reported a while back that I thought the 90 degree turn downs might be the culprit to the dirty back of the boat, it had nothing to do with it and after riding in a 340 monsoon without turn downs, there's a pretty dramatic difference in the sound with turn downs. I'm a fan and glad I didn't rip them off to find that it didn't fix anything!

Good news. So the smaller wallet dent means you can spend more for gas!

Mine is running rich, so I'll check fuel pressure before going much further.

I've noticed more soot buildup and more exhaust smell out of our boat the last couple years. Also seems to be down a bit on power. Did you notice a performance bump with the new regulator? For instance, we use WOT for pulling up male slalom skiers. I don't recall ever having to do that when the boat was new.

It seems to have more kick out of the hole but I can't help you on skiers. The only time it's not all the way down to pull someone up is when they're just learning and there's no ballast. Otherwise, it's hammer down to get the rider, the boat and a little extra water in the boat moving!
