new to th bu need some help

Recommended Posts

Hello there i am new to the forum and just purchased my first malibu a 90 skier with 600 hours on it for a steal.

The boat over heats and while i have aquired a wealth of info regarding this topic through your great forum a checklist of items to inspect or common problems would be greatly apreciated.

Also i want to change the oil as i do with any used combustion engine i purchase used. is there a link for step by step instructions?

Oh ya it's got a 5.7 mercruiser in it but i'm sure you all new that.

The impeller and was just replaced by the previous owner, (i will check to see if the hoses are switched or the impellar is backward, btw how do i do this?) the transmission cooler was checked and is free of debris, i'm thinking it may need a water pump but i don't know.

any info would be greatly apreciated.

thanks in advance

phil

Replace the thermostat.

Easiest way to check if the boat is pumpnig water is to put a clear section of hose after the raw water housing and watch.

I don't think our impellers have a front and back, so i don't think it can be in backwards. bicbw.

My impeller housing didn't have indications for which way the water would flow. That's one reason for my mix-up. When it happened it ran fine on a fake a lake. Only after I launched, idled to warm up, idled out and then started to accelerate did my overheat start, and the temp went up real quick after that.

The impeller itself does not have a front and back, but people can pretty easily screw up which hose goes to the top of the housing and which one goes in the bottom.

switch the two hoses and your motor isn't getting any water.

If there is no drain hose on the bottom of the motor, you will have to get an engine oil extracter. Your motor will take at least 5 qrts. of 15w-40 oil.
