If you do decide to go the route of getting a boom, but don't want to drop the $$$ on spending some time w/ a pro the next best thing would be to check out a couple of Lane Bowers videos on YouTube. These are clips taken directly from his DVD:

You might also check with your local boat dealer. Many of them will rent equipment to you for the weekend in hopes that you'll get hooked. I've seen local dealers rent wakeboards, skis, surfboards, sky skis.....so maybe they'd have a boom and a suit you could borrow.
