Straight tips and turn downs

I am interested in peoples thoughts on the difference between having straight exhaust tips or the turn downs, i have heard comments that the turn downs give a bit of a droney type effect from beneath the platform, are they quieter? or do the straight tips give a nicer exhaust note .

I think my turndowns on my 05 VLX are quieter...

but...

I upgraded from a 99 VLX, so I'm sure that has a LOT to do with it. Biggrin.gif

(The 05 is much quieter in general)

One of the boats I ski behind is a 2001 Sportster LX w/ TD's and Silent Riders...it's a darn shame how quiet that boat is. Biggrin.gif (I think he has the motor box insulated too).

Then there's my Sporty...no mufflers...no MB insulation...straight tips... Rockon.gif

She ain't quiet. Biggrin.gif

How much of the sound suppression is the tips and how much the mufflers? Dontknow.gif But it stands to reason that having the exhaust ports pointed down into the water would be quieter than having them pointing straight out.

I have been told the turn downs are the way to go, if you want to hear music better while in tow...........Aye the next boat.

Inside the boat the turn downs get the monsoon a nice deep low growl, On the platform and behind the boat its very quite at all speeds. They also look cool and match nicely with the SS wedge option.

straight tips are the loudest and louder than stock mufflers to me. Turn downs sound okay, but wouldn't say they are that much quieter.

*I think* that he wasn't talking about straight pipes, but the straight stainless exhaust tips out the back of the boat - 2 completely different things.

I've never heard any of the Malibu people, & I'm including Mike Sanchez in that, say that the turn-downs are really that much quieter. IIRC, Mike told me that in the boat they won't do anything to reduce the noise levels, & behind the boat maybe a little. They are more for dispersing the CO levels at the rear of & directly behind the boat.

I've never spoken with anyone about the stainless exhaust tips (some call them shotgun tips), so I can't comment on Malibu's version. I do remember seeing a long while back on Wakeworld, someone had put some on from Livorsi Marine (can't remember the boat, maybe a MC) & he swore that it was both quieter & had less exhaust smell at the transom. YMMV.

I have the Monsoon with stainless straights and it has a nice throughty sound to it. We love to listen to the V8 get up and go. Yahoo.gif

I've had a couple of boats with the straight tips and can't notice any sound difference from the boats prior to that with standard exhaust - boats similar and all had monsoons. HOWEVER, they do look way cool on the trailer and on the hoist.

hey Norcal I put the insulation on my boat for about $80 and really think it made a difference for the front seaters.

I wasn't / didn't say straight pipes, I said straight tips, ala stainless tips, I had them on my last boat and felt it was louder than previous and current boat, just looks cool!

My 2005 LX with straight tips seems several dB louder than the last boat (335 Monsoon) and much of that is probably the 400 Hammy making its statement.

It is a superb sound at speed but at trick speeds the tips bob in and out of the water barking out a V8 symphony - NICE!!

My mate's 2005 375HP CC 196 sounds like a cross between a washing machine and an old hoover vacuum cleaner by comparison. (It's also like riding a barrell)
