Did I get a rebuilt prop?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased an Acme 515 prop online from a discount distributer. According to customer service this is a brand new prop, but the workmanship is nowhere near the level I was expecting. One blade has obvious grinder marks which have eliminated the CNC lines. There are also small burrs where it goes from the leading to the trailing edge, and the transition is not a smooth curve. Is this normal or did they sell me a rebuilt prop??

Some minimal grinding and smooth spots would be normal as mentioned above, but in my experience with new props (I've bought several, but from OJ not ACME) the workman ship has been top notch as expected.

That sure does not sound normal to me at all... I would double check the product description and get on the phone with the seller. Is it possible that they sell both new props and rebuilt ones, and they shipped you a rebuilt one instead of a new one?

If that company IS an "authorized distributor" of acme products (id guess they are not since you said it was an online discount place), it might be worth it to take a quick picture of the prop and send it to acme. I'm sure acme would have keen interest in what their retailers are selling if its not up to par. If it is just Joe Shmoe on some website selling random props, then you will probably be on your own.

Can you post a picture of the prop, especially the area's in question?

The marks you see in the middle of the blade from grinding are normal and from balancing it as johnsvt mentioned. It's hard to tell on the one picture of the edge if it got dinged or is normal.

the one tip is hard to figure out. Can you see any marks on the hub face, back or inside indicating it was installed? If not then most likely its new.

The ding would be my big concern. If that was my prop it would be fixed be for it went on my boat. That is enough damage it could give you problems. Send it back.

Forgive my ignorance on how to post pics & poor photography skills. This is a link to pics:

I would have to agree. Looks like it got dropped right on the tip. Contact the seller.
