Mobil 1 302 & 301

Recommended Posts

I just stopped by the Advance Auto to pick up an oil filter and noticed that there is the Mobil M1-301 and M1-302. I have read all the postings on the site stating people are using the M1-302 and that someone actually cut one apart and found that there was no by-pass.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the M1-301 and M1-302.....is it that the 301 has a by-pass?

On most filters you can look inside and see the by-pass in the bottom. Some brands put them in the top where they can't be seen though.

I went by the store last night and bought the M1-302. Out of curiosity I opened up the box with the M1-301 and did notice a difference. Even though the M1-301 outer canister appears to have the same height and diameter, the inner seal / gasket (where it mates to the engine block) has a smaller diameter. Not sure there are any internal differences. I have sent off a question to the folks at MobilOil to see if they can shed some light on any other differences.

Went to the auto parts store today, so I took a look at the filters. The M1-301 filter is for Ford applications and I did not see a by-pass valve in it. I then took a look in the filter for my truck, the M1-110 and is does have a by-pass valve in the bottom. The valve is blue in color. So, evidently the M1 (Champion Filters) puts the by-pass in the bottom of the filter where it can be seen. The M1-302 is spec'd for V-8 GM gas engines, but more so for the diesel engines. Personally I don't like to use filters without a by-pass valve even though under normal circumstanses it should never be needed. But running 40 or 50 wieght oil on cool mornings could be one of those out of normal circumstanses when the oil is very thick and has trouble getting through the filter media. This is where the by-pass is very critical to getting oil into the engine. By the way, I was the one who cut the 302 open.
