Can we ask pricing questions on this board?

Wow! Someone who actually asks about it before assuming its ok and opens their mouth! Generally around here, people will talk about used boat prices, but will not give definitive prices as to what they paid for a new boat. Alot of people feel that price is only part of the package, and that your relationship with the dealer is worth alot too. People will give you a good idea as to what kind of % off MSRP to expect or what is considered good. I'll let someone who knows more about the new boat market chime in on that one.

I don't understand the taboo about talking about new boat prices. If you are buying a new car you can get all kinds of information about dealer invoices and markups and what the car sells for but that doesn't appear to be true in the boat marketplace.

You can find a chevy dealer around every corner. Malibu dealers are spread thin and may have different incentives based on volume of boats sold. A dealer that is located in area that has a small market for inboards and only sells a few may need more margin than one that has a large customer base. People will travel great distances to save on a boat, If we posted prices it would give dealers in large markets a unfair advantage. Just a theory.

The auto industry is structured differently and moves a ton more units. Auto dealers have hold-back, dealer cash, dealer incentives,... so "invoice" isn't the true cost of the vehicle. And don't think for a second the auto dealers like the fact that all that info is out there. It's just a different product with a different selling environment.

We had a poll recently where a number people thought that a boat dealer should make $1500 on the sale of a $50K boat (and quite a few selected < $2500). That's stoopid®. The average consumer obviously doesn't realize the costs involved in running a successful business.

The "average" American is not that smart and half the country is dumber than that.

Exactly. I know what kind of margin we have charge to make a decent profit with overhead, and we have nothing close to the overhead of a Marine.

Welcome.

You won't get much help here on new boat pricing, sorry. No one will agree and for some reason people seem to think the price of a boat changes if it is sold in CA or FL. I am sure there is some concession for the larger dealers, but it is very little.

It does, but it has to do with supply, demand & what the market will bear. Value is all relative, unfortunately.

There may be Dontknow.gif but likely the larger dealers are in higher rent areas and thereby have much higher overhead.

Let me clarify, I believe a boat should have the same cost to the dealer. What price the dealer sells the boat for is dependant upon the local market.

I agree with Johnsvt I manage a mid sized Chrysler dealership. Everyone pays the same for the vehicle. It is then the dealers choice what to sell the vechilce for. And depends on the incentives that the factory is offering.

Since opinion is mixed here it is for open feedback. I won't share dealer or location to be fair.

Me either!! It is up to the individual reader if they want to reply or not. They could even PM if they don't want to disclose the price they paid on the board. Yes a dealer needs to make a fair profit. However, how do you determine what is fair if you do not have any idea how much the dealer pays for the boat. A lot of people say X% off of MSRP but where do you get MSRP. Malibu doesn't list it anywhere (boat and options). Well, it is called research and that is why I think it is OK!!!!!!!

WOW! Where I'm from, I wouldn't DREAM of having such a deal! If I were you, I'd go for it, no questions asked! That's not much more tahn what they'd charge me for a VTX.

BTW...Especially for you new members. It's is not taboo to post pricing on this site as far as the Terms Of Use go for TheMalibuCrew.com. It's totally up to the individual member to post if they want to or not. Some do not see any problem with it and some do. If you don't have a problem with it, post away. There will always be those that do and those that don't. Just remember that there are many variables in this pricing game. As long as you are happy with your price paid, all is well.

I was told a dealer can get some brake given the # of boats bought. I think this may apply to boats bought up front on a new year. I also think I got a slightly better deal than waiting for the boat show. I would think it depends on timing of boat show and new model year . Whistling.gif

The 2 best times to buy a boat are:

1.) Early Fall when the manufacturer is trying to get the new model boats out, and there are incentives to sell as a lot of dealers head into the winter months.

2.) Boat show season.
