Trailer brake light problem solved

Recommended Posts

I appear to have solved my intermittent trailer brake light problem.

I thought that my experience might be useful to others.

I trailer with a new 2004 Suburban which is a great tow vehicle.

This boating season I have been experiencing intermittent failure of the right trailer brake light. The car brake lights work perfectly and the problem was limited to the right trailer brake light. The left brake light, turn signals and night time lights have always worked properly.

The problem turned out to be a defective module in the Suburban. Apparently the module controls the turn signals & hazard flasher light for the car (which, again, operate normally). But, the module ALSO controls some of the power output to the receptacle the trailer plugs into. Thus, the car operates properly but the trailer experiences the problem.

We were only able to figure this out after maddening investigation including replacement of the brake light module on the trailer, two trips to the Chevy dealer and two trips to the local trailer repair shop.

The Chevy dealer was very good about repairing the problem at no charge. The intermittent nature of the problem was what made finding a solution difficult.

I hope this helps anyone who might be unfortunate enough to have the same problem. This is the only defect we have noticed in our Suburban.

I hope I haven't jinxed myself on this one.

John
