Weekend Disaster

Recommended Posts

Over the past weekend my 2001 Malibu Wakesetter 23’ hit ground, stalling the engine. Once on the trailer I noticed the prop was bent and a small gelcoat crack in front of the rudder mount. Also the ruder was slightly bent to the right which made it difficult to turn by hand.

Took it to the local dealer today and will most likely need a new strut, prop, and engine alignment. The ruder sleeve or mount might also need replacement. The gelcoat could be fixed at another location.

I’ve tried looking up parts online but haven’t had any luck; any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

email or pm me. There's a local guy that does amazing fiberglass repair. He's done work for me and my family and we've never been able to tell the difference once he finished. He also re-finishes all of Maeghan Major's demo boats before they're sold.

DITTO! Call your insurance company. Or your in for a BIG $$$$$$$$$.

Yeah, your insurance should cover the damage. I did the same thing last year and the damage was over $4k.

We had a 2500+ bill last summer cause Chadellt85 doesn't know how to drive. Just kidding Tease2.gif Our insurance tried to get out of paying at first, but it didn't take long for them to change their tone Biggrin.gif If there is anything upgraded that you want, now is the time to get it...I know this "person" who walked away with a better prop he wanted, push pin style wedge, and drip less shaft packing system Whistling.gif

when i had that happen last summer it cost $3000 to have all that fixed. it also cost another $3000 to have airbags put under to lift it and bring back to shore. insurance picked up the tab with no problems. i got my new insuramce premium for the year and it was cheaper than last year.

WOW...that totally sucks, I hate to hear about hits like that especially in the height of the season. I agree with the rest of the Malibu folk...call your insurance company. By the way I hear that USAA is a good insurance company... Surprised.gifTease.gifYahoo.gif

USAA does NOT cover ski boats though. they pass off to progressive. they did the same for my center console boat too.

We ran over a submerged log last year and did about $6500 worth of damage. The shaft was only slightly bent, but there were stress cracks on the gel coat. They ended up removing the engine to repair sections of fiberglass. Take yours to a good shop, and call your insurance co.

Are you sure about this? I've had USAA insurance on my skiboats for 12 years and I've never seen anything about this. As a matter of fact, I see the boat insurance listed on my statement every month. They may use progressive as an underwriter, but they still maintain and service the policy as far as I know.

Call your insurance company fast. If I can help let me know I am an insurance agent. If you need a pull, I am on Lake Norman near Camp Dogwood. Good Luck.
