Shaft Seal Packing Size

Someone who's done it may chime in here, but if not, search wakeside rides. It's there someplace. Or call Peter. He's probably not busy now anyway. Biggrin.gif

ROFL!

Now that's funny!

Scott, sorry I didn't have the answer, I've never repacked, just replace 'em with dripless.

Okay, now that I have the Speedo-visual out of my mind, I went to replace my packing with the goretex stuff but I couldn't get the old packing out. I have an 03 XTi and when you loosen the packing nut, you have about a quarter inch available to dig out the old packing assuming you don't remove the drive shaft completely. Am I just being a wuss or is this do-able by a mere mortal?

I had probably 1 1/2" -- took a coat hanger and bent it and dug out some -- there actually wasn't an awful lot that came out. One of the other guys I ski with said he just put the new in and didn't even bother trying to clean out the old.

Not sure if you can get a dental pick in there, having never done it myself, but that's what I've heard others use.

Hmmm....I wonder where a guy could get one of those? BTW they work great for a ton of uses. Maybe I should put one in the glove box for the old 'just in case'!!

I used a dental pick to get mine out. It was jammed in there pretty good so I basically poked at it until it tore and then picked the end out to where I could grab it. The Gore stuff is great and has been in there since 2000 without any maintenance.

I think the pick was part of my dogs teeth cleaning kit along with the tarter scrapers and all that. The dog didn't seem to mind that I used it for something else.
