Alternator

Recommended Posts

I have a 99 Sportster LX with the Indmar 350 engine. Today, my volt gauge was showing zero production from my aternator and my battery drained down and engine quit. Went to the Auto parts store to get the alternator tested and he said he hadn't seen one like it. Odd alternator or ill informed store worker? Are the normal alternators on the 350 chevy/Indmar engines unique?

marine alternators differ from standard automotive units.

spark supression is MUCH more important in the bilge of a boat than in an open air auto application.

go pay the long dollar to the marina or to get your oem unit rebuilt (make sure the rebuilderis comfortable w a marine version).

good luck w it.

I too have ran into that problem. Turns out that our alternators are indeed different than auto ones. Easy to take off and my guy can rebuild them in one day for about $60. Versus $240 for a new one.
