19.6 and max (1200lbs) tried moving it around a bit.. still not very clean. should have gone with the free floating wedge?

Then you need to pull the wedge up & dump some ballast. The wake on the VLX doesn't clean up with an empty boat until 18mph-ish, & the more you start loading it down the faster you need to go to keep a clean wake. So you either need to do that, get used to riding faster or get used to riding a wake that isn't very clean.

Huge 2nd on dumping some of the ballast. 19.6 is pretty slow. Starting out it will help you to learn on a smaller wake anyways. You might try pushing your speed up to at least 21.6 mph. That is generally the speed I will pull beginners, if you're not good enough to be bumping up the speed to around that you shouldn't be riding with any ballast IMO.

It may seem like it's hindering to you at first, but if you learn how to pop with proper technique it will exponentially accelerate your learning curve as you start to become more advanced.

We normally ride at 23 with full ballast and wedge at 2 up. That is with a crew of 4-5. Today we had crew of 8. We ran with full ballast and no wedge. The wake was huge!!! One of the guys had never riden behind a Malibu. Said this was the biggest wake he had ever riden with factor ballast.

We also tried the surfing wake. All ballast except for the side we were surfing on. Wedge at 9 up. Speed at 10.6. Several comments were made about this being the best surfing wake they had ever ridden!!!
