Alternator Questions

Recommended Posts

Having a bit of a prob w/ my alternator. I felt as though it may have been bad so took it out to have it rebuilt and the shop says it is just fine. Problem is that it only seems to charge one of my batteries. When the switch is on the other battery the volt gauge drops. However, on the other battery it only seems to charge when idling. At speed, the voltage again drops to around 10 volts. At idle, that battery is charging in the 13 - 14 range. Like I said, the other battery though only charges at 10 volts whether idling or running at speed. Was told it could be a ground problem. Everything seemed fine there. What could this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you had the batterie's tested ?

If it's charging battery #1 fine and the other one not so good I think that narrows it down a bit.

I now I'm going out on a limb here but I'd have to say it something to do with battery # 2 or it's wiring.

I have thought about the battery and the wiring, however, why on battery one would it drop volts when running at speed? Could this be a ground problem at the alternator possibly? Seems to me that it should charge better when running at speed right?

i would check and clean all the connections that have anything to do with that battery and maybe have that battery tested

Check wiring again and then I would check your belts.

Do the simple, easy things first - check the batteries. Pull them both out and take them to an auto parts store (or garage). Get them to check them. Bet one of your batteries is dead or dying. If its not the batteries, check your Perko switch wiring and connections.
