Prop

Recommended Posts

Just a quick ? Just made the switch from an O/I to a DD. ( Ride XTi ). On my old 18' Searay with a 5.7, I was running a 4 blade stainless prop. It made a huge difference from the stock alum. 3 blade. The ? is....does a stainless 3 or 4 blade make as much of a difference on the DD's. I have no idea what kind of prop is on my new Ride. It is a copper 3 blade, sorry, this is my first Malibu...so still trying to figure it out.

You probably have an ACME NiBrAl prop. It is production is computer numerically controlled (CNC) for precision. This 3blade prop has the surface area nearly that of a 4blade, giving you good acceleration and holding power but not taking away from top speed.

The material of this prop will give if you hit something hard. With a stainless prop you run the risk of transferring the damage to your strut and driveshaft as well. Lots of $ if this happens.

Have fun with your new inboard!!!

Yup, ran a 5-blade stainless on my first boat. But, as above, I wouldn't run a SS

on my Malibu. I want it to give if I hit something to hopefully save strut and

driveshaft.

I think the 4-blade Nibrals are primarily for V-drives. Those 3-bladers for the DDs

have and equivalent blade surface area to the 4-bladers.

I wouldn't worry about changing props unless you think you're not getting

everything you need out of your current prop. There's a lot more hole shot

with an inboard with a 300 plus HP engine than you ever had with your I/O.
